Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is looking for a distinguished, innovative and dynamic scholar to lead the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.The UniversityFounded in 1956, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is a public university which strives to become a world-class research-led liberal arts University in Asia for the world delivering academic and research excellence in a caring, creative and global culture. The University's ambitious Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028 sets the research direction to transform HKBU into a reputable international powerhouse for research and teaching excellence. The University currently has an academic and teaching staff strength of about 900 and a student population of over 12,000.The FacultyThe University Council has recently approved the consolidation of the existing Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences into one, namely Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, effective from 1 July 2024. The two existing faculties have a total of over 3,800 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 178 full-time faculty members. The 12 current Departments will join to form the following four Academies:(i) Academy of Language and Culture;(ii) Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy;(iii) Academy of Geography, Sociology and International Studies; and(iv) Academy of Wellness and Human DevelopmentWith the consolidation, it facilitates transdisciplinary teaching, formation of critical teaching and research masses, and provides students with more opportunities in transdisciplinary learning. It also enables unique and impactful research, contributing to the University's new research cluster of “Humanities and Cultures”.
The AppointeeThe appointee should be a visionary leader and distinguished scholar who will steer the developments of the new Faculty through leveraging the integrated academies across different fields and mutual engagement of humanities and technologies for the greater good of mankind. The appointee will expand the breadth and impact of faculty research, provide effective leadership, foster strong partnerships and collaborations with other universities and the industry and solicit external funding to support the Faculty's research and initiatives. The appointee will work closely with the Senior Management Team and the other Deans of Faculties/Schools to contribute to the strategic development of the University. Apart from the duties and responsibilities in academic leadership and management, it is expected that the appointee will hold a concurrent academic appointment in the Faculty and engage in research, teaching and other scholarly activities.Applicants should have a proven successful track record of academic leadership and international perspective. Excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills are necessary.Appointment TermsThe appointment will normally be made on a three-year term and is renewable subject to review and mutual agreement.
