Technician (carrying the job title of ‘Safety Specialist’)The University Safety Office is looking for a scientifically trained individual to join as a Safety Specialist at the Technician grade. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in physical sciences and laboratory experience who are seeking to apply their scientific knowledge in real-world safety operations, with a clear pathway to develop specialised expertise in radiation safety—an increasingly vital field in research and industry.The appointee will play a key role in supporting laboratory safety across the University, working closely with research and technical teams to ensure safe practices in diverse scientific settings. In addition to general safety responsibilities, the role offers a strong focus on radiation protection, including the management of radioactive substances and irradiating apparatus, co-ordination of health surveillance programmes for radiation workers, and oversight of compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks.Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor’s degree/ Higher Diploma/ Higher Certificate in Physical Science, Engineering, or relevant disciplines from a recognised university or technical institute; OR a Diploma/ Certificate in a relevant discipline from a recognised university or technical institute plus 3 years’ relevant post-qualification work experience; (ii) a strong sense of responsibility; (iii) good interpersonal skills; and (iv) self-motivation and the willingness to learn.
